Event 12 - May 1993 - Woodcote Park

12th Golf day held on 17th May 1993

Dave Frampton was not available to start the day and defend his title and so it was Robin Dyson (runner-up last time) to start proceedings. He was aiming for a hat-trick of wins and made light work of the front nine with 20 points. A few games behind Colin Fish was hard on his tail with 19 at the halfway stage with Steve Watson's 17 putting him next. Crucially Colin lost a ball on the 15th but walked back to play another and avoided a blob. Both Robin and Colin came in with 37. Meanwhile Brandon Frost was blitzing the back nine with 22 for a final 36. This included him picking up on the 7th hole still with a two foot putt for a point. So the countback was needed and Colin Fish won the Stableford with a better back nine, a feat he'd also achieved at Cherry Lodge in 1991. Cruelly for Robin he had now missed out on the countback in consecutive competitions. 

The nearest-the-pin was held at the third and was won by Simon Monahan with a shot to within 6 feet which gave him the only two of the day. Brandon Frost's form on the back nine saw him hit a huge drive on the tenth hole to win the longest-drive. 

In the afternoon the Society played Greensomes for the first time (Scramble not being allowed). Conditions were tough, a storm developed half way round with thunder and lightening. The last match sought refuge in the clubhouse. The pairs did well to better 30 points and it came down to the countback yet again with two teams on 32. The winners were the duo of Gary Pitt and Robin Dyson ahead of Peter Miles & Bob Torreson.

The Woodcote Park golf club really looked after the players with a generous refund per head due to one temporary green. The food was good but the lunchtime buffet was exceptional.
