Event 29 - Summer 1999 - Kent

4th Summer Trip held on 9th/10th July 1999

For our fourth Summer event, Eleven golfers made the trip down to Kent where we stayed in an excellent b&b in Canterbury, St Johns Guest House. We were recommended to a suitable Indian restaurant for the usual curry which we had in two sittings due to our staggered arrival. While some of us were busy enjoying our meal and minding our own business, some customers caused a bit of a ruckus only for the waiters to get stuck in.  Both golf clubs were about a half hours drive away.

Eclectic at Broome Park GC

Paul Walker achieved back-to-back wins in the two-round eclectic, retaining his title won the previous year at Meon Valley. Gary Pitt had led after the morning round with 38, and two birdies. Paul was just one behind having scored on every hole. Rookie John Jones shot 35 without a blob either and there were also four others on 34. In the afternoon round, Peter Hopkins scored the day's best of 39 for a total of 50. Paul Hanby scored a much improved 38 with a couple of birdies. Steve Watson shot 22 on the front-nine but faded for 36 pts. This was just good enough for second. And finally for Paul, who scored 33 and a betterball 48. His bonus points gave him a winning score of 51 and 1/2. The day was finished with a nice meal in the splendid country house, seen in the picture above.

Medal at Herne Bay GC

Peter Hopkins showed all the lower handicappers a thing or too with a superb round of golf for a level handicap score and victory in the Saturday medal. It was a true test with hard summer greens and a number of water hazards. His nearest rival was Richard Walsh who finished some 6 shots behind. Herne Bay is is an excellent course and the service was excellent too. We'd certainly recommend Herne Bay Golf Club to other societies.
